From parent volunteer to Assistant Headteacher

Becky Makinson, Assistant Headteacher

My journey at Laurance Haines began simply as a parent volunteer, tidying gardens and reading with Year One children each morning. I loved being part of the school community, never imagining where it would lead.

When a teacher suggested I consider working at the school, I took the leap. I started as a resources assistant, but my heart was drawn to working directly with children. When a teaching assistant position arose, the school encouraged me to apply. Shortly after, I successfully applied for a higher-level teaching assistant role, and the leadership team supported me through my HLTA qualification.

Being asked to cover a class ignited something in me. I discovered my passion for teaching and expressed interest in completing my teaching qualification. The school's support was unwavering. I progressed to phase leader, and when the assistant headteacher position became available, I was encouraged to apply.

Today, I'm proud to serve as assistant headteacher at Laurance Haines. This school hasn't just given me opportunities—it has nurtured and believed in me every step of the way. They saw potential I didn't know I had and supported my growth both professionally and personally. Laurance Haines doesn't just educate children; it transforms lives, including mine.
